Did you know your business and brand are not the same thing? And what is 'branding' anyway? And isn't marketing and sales the same thing?
In this blog post I will try my absolute best to explain the difference between all of these.
Let's compare business, brand, branding, marketing and sales.
| Definition | Description | Examples |
Business | Your business is the foundation. | Your product and services. Your employees. Your offers. Your systems within the company that focuses on driving sales. | Staff, offers, products, services, etc. |
Brand | Your brand embodies your company’s character. It’s your personality and core of your identity. | It is YOU and your business' promises, values and differentiators. | Unique value proposition, USP, purpose, promise, mission, vision, values, ‘why’, story, history. |
Branding | Branding is the act of communicating your positioning. It creates the context for how others perceive your business, your reputation so to say. | Branding establishes a look and feel for your brand to help you stand out that appeals to customers on an emotional level. | Logo, fonts, colors, tagline, voice and feel that communicate what the brand is. |
Marketing | Marketing focuses on moving the product from the company/business to the market (through product launches and awareness campaigns). It is the act/technique of promoting your product/brand and getting your message out. | Letting the customers know about the product. Reach the widest audience possible. Attracting the customer towards the product. Generating leads through research and strategy. | Advertisements, messages, materials, trade show booths, SEO, campaigns and such that promote purchases. |
Sales | Sales is the act of moving the product from the market to the customer and the process of nurturing leads towards conversion. | Understanding the needs of the customer. Building a 1-to-1 level rapport. Approaching the client first. Nurturing the leads towards conversion, a.k.a. the actual selling process. | Finding leads, contacting, presenting, closing deals and nurturing connections. |
So again, to sum it all up:
Business VS Brand: Foundation of company VS your core identity.
Brand VS Branding: Your core identity VS the way you visually communicate your identity.
Branding VS Marketing: Your visual identity VS the tools you use to promote your product or service.
Marketing VS Sales: Getting your story out and creating interest in the product or service VS actually closing the deal and nurturing the leads.
I hope this gave you some insight and clarity on all these common terms. If you have any more questions, or even something to add to this, don't hesitate to send me a message!
