How to choose the best social media platform for your business

Are you questioning which social media platform you should be on? And on which platform your digital marketing efforts will pay off the most? I created a short and simple guide for you to help you choose your fighter… I mean platform!

Goals of each platform

The platform

The goal

Facebook

To stay in touch

Twitter

To stay informed

LinkedIn

To network

Instagram

To be inspired

Pinterest

To get new ideas

TikTok

To get seen

Facebook

Best for

  • Link clicks

  • Word-of-mouth

  • Awareness

  • Event registrations

  • Sharing posts in groups

Key differentiating trait

This is THE platform, but it doesn’t mean you need to be there. With the challenges the platform has faced over the years, some users are choosing to spend their social media time elsewhere (like Instagram, which is also a Meta platform). That being said, there’s still no better place to find and engage with customers, donors, or others.

Relevant for these business types

  • Local Brick & Mortar Stores

  • F&B venues (especially if you have events)

  • Nonprofits

  • B2B Companies

Twitter

Best for

  • Link clicks

  • Engagement

  • Foot traffic

Key differentiating trait

Fast-moving, real-time, news-driven platform. Strong customer service element, be prepared to engage and respond to customers there.

Relevant for these business types

  • Retail

  • Nonprofits

  • Newspapers & Media Outlets

LinkedIn

Best for

  • Link clicks

  • Event registrations

  • Networking with potential clients and/or people in the same business

Key differentiating trait

LinkedIn is a profession-driven platform, unlike almost every other platform, which is designed for the user to focus on their personal interests.

Relevant for these business types

  • Luxury Goods & Services

  • Software Providers

  • B2B Companies

Instagram

Best for

  • Foot traffic

  • Word-of-mouth

  • Awareness

  • Engagement

Key differentiating trait

There are very few ways to link from Instagram, so this really is a brand-building platform. It is also a visual platform. So if you want to be on Instagram, get ready to focus on great quality photos and videos.

Relevant for these business types

  • F&B venues

  • Travel Agencies

  • Art related, like Museums & Creators/Artists

  • Retail

Pinterest

Best for

  • Link clicks

Key differentiating trait

Despite its very large usage, Pinterest is more of a niche platform. It is great for businesses that involve planning, design, creation, making. Mainly female audience.

Relevant for these business types

  • Restaurants

  • Interior Design

  • Wedding Venues

TikTok

Best for

  • Awareness/being seen

  • Entertainment

Key differentiating trait

TikTok is a video-only platform with 4 ways to get seen: By being followed, via hashtags, by using a trending sound, or bij landing on the For You Page. With a bit of creativity and by participating in trends, you can grow quite fast on TikTok. All it takes is one viral sound or trend to get your business noticed.

Relevant for these business types

  • (Small) retail brands with products (people are 1.4x more likely to research products that get recommended on TikTok)

  • Creators, designers, arists

  • Education sector

  • Coaches
